The Mindset Issues Holding You Back; Not Losing Weight?

Check your negative mindset at the door!

So you eat all the right foods, work out five days a week, drink all the water, take all the supplements… but you’re still not seeing the weight loss you want. What gives?

It might just be your mindset.

Your brain is powerful, and the things you believe – both consciously and subconsciously – about yourself are powerful. And when you’re trying to lose weight and improve your health, your mindset is one of the most important predictors of long-term success!

Okay, But What Is Mindset Really?

A healthy mindset involves finding ways to grow from your thoughts instead of letting them control your life. Rather than dwelling on a negative thought until it becomes overwhelming, the healthy mindset tries to a) move beyond that thought or b) simply accept it.

Here’s how it works: You start a new healthy lifestyle and have one “off”, not bad, day. So your mind automatically goes to “Here you go again. Start something and always fail.” So you self-sabotage without even realizing it.

When you increase awareness of your mindset, you’ll start to notice little things throughout your day – like do you let a poor choice at lunch also sabotage your dinner because “oh well I already screwed up so why bother.” or you can’t get into your favorite pants so you run to the cabinet for the Oreos.

How Does Mindset Affect Weight Loss?

It’s pretty simple really: “Success is getting back on that dang horse.”

See, when you perceive yourself as a “failure” and stop, that is the only way you truly “fail”. I like the mindset of “failing forward”. This means to take what you learned and apply it for moving forward from that moment.

It’s not magic, but it honestly might feel like it!

Your mindset influences:

  • your future success

  • your body’s ability to lose fat…..YES!

  • your energy and brain power to learn new things, keep fighting, and enjoy the journey

So you can see how important it is to master your mindset if you want to achieve your weight loss goals!

How to Improve Your Mindset

So we know what mindset is – A healthy mindset involves finding ways to grow from your thoughts instead of letting them control your life – and we know how it affects weight loss.

But how do we change or improve our mindset?

One of the easiest ways is with daily affirmations!

You identify the blocks you have:

  • All-or-nothing-thinking: I have to be completely ready to start.

  • Negative Body Image: negative body image is tied to self-worth

  • Living a life full of stress: Stress is the opposite of what is needed

  • Obsessive restrictions: leads to binge eating

  • Obsessed about the number on the scale: again Stress!

And then you replace those limiting beliefs and actions with the things you want to be true. Except you say them like they are already fact.

“I believe in myself and my ability to succeed. I have hope and certainty about the future.”

“Everything I eat nourishes and strengthens my body and mind.”

“I don’t aim for perfection. I accept mistakes and learn from them.”

“I accept the past and know the future will be bright and happy.”

Once you create your affirmations, practice saying them to yourself. I recommend saying them out loud for maximum effect, post them in your home, car, and office & say them often! After a while, you’ll find yourself walking past a mirror or store window walking a little taller, pointing out positive attributes of yourself to yourself, and appreciating the small positive steps forward more often.
